Background & Introduction
About the Department
The Department of Biological Sciences traces its root back to the Mariano Marcos Memorial College of Science and Technology. Its creation as a department of the College of Arts and Sciences was highlighted by the start of the offering of Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1978. This was followed by the offering of Master of Science in Biology and Master in Biological Sciences in 2006. The department also offers biology courses to other degree and non-degree programs . As part of its mandates, it undertakes research, extension, and product development activities through biotechnology, microbiology and bioprocessing and other biology-related researches. Further, the department exists to develop careers in Biology and to prepare students for medical profession and advanced studies.

Program Offerings
Bachelor of Science in Biology
The BS Biology program is structure and generalized framework of study with fundamental concepts principles and theories of biological, natural and physical sciences and the conduct of research. It includes acquisition of appropriate skills and training in the efficient processing and presentation of information in both written and oral form.
The Biology program is structured to meet the needs of professional biologists who can be employed in government or private agencies where scientists with biological expertise are needed. They can engage in entrepreneurial activities, conduct researches, pursue teaching career and undertake advanced studies in biology, medicine and other allied fields.
Program Outcomes
The minimum standards for the BS Biology program are expressed in the following minimum set of learning outcomes:
1. Apply the latest developments in the biological field of practice.
2. Work effectively and independently in multidisciplinary and multi-cultural teams.
3. Demonstrate professional spirit, social, and ethical responsibility.
4. Promote preservation of natural resources and sustainable development.
5. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge and understanding in the core areas of physical and natural sciences.
6. Apply critical and problem-solving skills using the scientific method.
7. Interpret relevant scientific data and make judgments that include reflection on relevant scientific and ethical issues.
8. Carry out basic mathematical and statistical computations and use appropriate technologies in (1) the analysis of data and (2) in pattern recognition, generalization, abstraction, critical analysis and problem solving.
9. Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions, both orally and in writing, to other scientists, decision makers and the public.
10. Design and perform safe and responsible techniques and procedures in laboratory or field practices.
11. Develop an in-depth understanding of the basic principles governing the science of life.
12. Develop and utilize techniques/procedures relevant to biological research work in laboratory or field settings.
13. Extend knowledge and critically asses current views and theories in various areas of biological sciences.
