MMSU avails of free virtual fishery library devices

July 16, 2018

MMSU is one of the 14 state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the country that received free virtual fishery library devices donated by the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center-Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC-AQD), in celebration of the agency’s 45th foundation anniversary.

The device was received by Maybelle Perinion, librarian of the MMSU College of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology (CASAT) in a ceremony held at SEAFDEC office  in Brgy. Buyuan, Tigbauan, Iloilo last July 12.

Also called the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Center (IAMSLIC) Digital Fisheries Library, the device provides access to more than 26,000 aquatic and marine science publications, including SEAFDEC publications. The digital library can be accessed by users through their laptops or smart phones with Wi-Fi connection.

Aside from MMSU, the other recipients of the device are the Aklan State University, Capiz State University, Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College, University of Antique at Tario Lim Memorial Campus, University of the Philippines in Iloilo, Bicol University, Mindanao State University, Western Philippine University in Puerto Princesa, Bohol Island State University, Samar State University, University of Southern Mindanao, Iloilo State College of Fisheries, and Central Luzon State University.

SEAFDEC plans to deposit more of its publications in the digital library, including publications from the agency’s other departments such as the Marine Fisheries Research Department in Malaysia and Singapore, and the Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department in Indonesia.

The Philippines is the first country in the whole of Asia to use the device, and to date, there are 19 of such gadgets in the country. The country obtained its first five gadgets donated by the IAAMSLIC in 2016. These were given to libraries devastated by typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

Prof. Andres Tungpalan, CASAT dean, believes that the virtual library is useful based on the response of students of fishery schools in the country who are doing undergraduate theses and who have been using the device.
